3 Reasons Saying 'No' Will Create a Healthier, Happier You

We all live by our calender, iPhone reminders and 24/7 accessibility via email, text, social media, phone calls or skype. With all the commitment, planning, overbooking and constant stimulation - when does the down time fit in? More importantly, when is your "me" time?
Everyone is busy. All the time, constantly busy and bombarded by to-do's, schedules and deadlines. I'm constantly reminded of my own chaos by my ever changing schedule, relaying way to much on my Google cal and the challenging task of reserving a simple "girls night dinner" with my closest friends. Unless it's booked 1 month in advance, everyone is always TOO busy.
That being said, I'm determined to bring awareness to the importance of mindfulness and living in the moment. Stopping, pausing, taking a break to decompress and just "be" is one of the nicest gifts to give yourself this year. Here's why:
1. Over stimulation begets stress - stress can cause difficulty sleeping, over eating and an increase in the inflammatory hormone, cortisol, in the body, which can reek havoc on your immune system, weight and overall health. What to do? Say "no" to that happy hour, dinner date or last minute meeting. Give yourself some peace and quiet to truly relax. Even 5 minutes of downtime can make a world of difference. Turn off your phone, watch a mindless TV show, go for a walk around the block, play with your dog, enjoy a cup of tea or take a hot bubble bath. Everyone needs a little "me" time, your health depends on it!
2. A racing mind produces anxiety - anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S (according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America) and this illness affects 40 million adults. We've all experienced anxiety at some point or another in our lives but putting the mind and body under that constant state can severely impact your life socially, professionally and emotionally. Suffering from anxiety more often than you'd like? Say "no" more often. Turn your phone off, shut down your computer and unplug the TV. Let your emails wait until tomorrow (yes, it's possible to wait to return that email that just popped up at 8pm) and allow yourself to be legitimately off the clock when you leave work. Once home from work, designate a quiet space as your escape from the chaos. Your bedroom, a comfy chair or a seat outside is a perfect place to unwind, unplug and quiet that racing mind. Read a book, a mindless magazine or just close your eyes and "be" for a few minutes. You'll immediately feel calm, relieved and relaxed (even if just for a few moments) which can immensely help treat and even prevent your anxiety.
3. Take a personal Friday night and re-charge - do you ever just want to spend the night in, crash on the couch and just relax on a Friday night after a crazy work week? Go for it! Stay "no" to a late night out with friends and give yourself a re-charge night. Instead of feeling guilty for backing out of plans or missing out on the nights festivities, saying "no" allows you to feel relieved and excited about a quiet night of relaxation. Look forward to heading to bed earlier and feeling fabulous and full of energy the next morning. You deserve it and your body, mind and soul will thank you!
Put yourself first more often this year and practice mindfulness by saying "no" and giving yourself some "me" time. You'll feel less stressed and anxious and more energetic, happier and healthier overall. And hey, you may even lose weight in the process!
